The stages of creating a lawn, a lawn

Sowing your lawn or lawn well guarantees that your grass will emerge quickly and grow well.

It will be necessary to make sure to have a watering at hand during the first weeks because it is essential to water well at the beginning.

Fertilizer will not be added for several weeks until the new lawn takes root well.

1- Soil preparation:

  • The first step is to to plow. Manually for an area not exceeding 100 m2 and with a tiller for larger ones.
  • Remove as many stones, pebbles, stumps and other pieces of wood as possible in order to clean the surface to be seeded as well as possible.
  • Ideally incorporate a manure and algae type amendment if your soil is poor and a slow-release fertilizer to stimulate root development.
  • Level the ground to minimize light clods of earth.

2- Sow the grass:

  • It's important to distribute the seeds very evenly. You can use an automatic spreader for this.
  • In all cases, follow the doses prescribed on the packaging and carry out a cross sowing (once in one direction, once in the other).
You will put more seeds on the edges of the field.
  • Cover the seeds very lightly with the rake, taking care to always perform the gesture in the same direction. Ideally, cover with a thin film of potting soil.

3- After sowing, tamp and water the soil:

  • Tamp with a roller in order to smooth the soil and bring all the seeds into contact with the soil.

  • Water as soon as the sowing is done and then regularly over the following days if it does not rain.

  • Daily watering is recommended until emergence.
  • When the lawn has grown 4 to 5 cm, eventually roll again to firm the roots.

  • Mow as soon as the shoots reach 8 to 10 cm and then roll one last time.

Lawn or lawn sparse after sowing

It is common for new sod or lawn to be sparse after seeding. We then see places where the lawn grows well and others where there are holes and where the grass does not or hardly grows.

This is linked to several parameters:

  • The seedling was spread unevenly.
  • Watering or rain after sowing tended to displace the seeds and bring them back to one place. Hence the importance of rolling the roller well after sowing to bury the seeds.
  • If the ground is not straight, the water flow can also be uneven and thus promote growth in one place rather than another. Hence the importance of watering regularly in fine rain after sowing.

Once the lawn is up and if the holes persist, you can re-sow where the grass did not grow, taking care to roll and water regularly.

Maintenance of a young lawn

Although fertilizers are available for young lawns or lawns, it is advisable to wait several weeks before applying fertilizer.

Applying fertilizer too soon could literally burn your young lawn.

First mowing after sowing:

You must wait until the lawn is at least 8 to 10 cm long before mowing for the first time.

No need to mow before, you will only weaken the young shoots that have not yet reached this size.

Watering young lawns:

The faster your grass will have taken root, the more you will prevent weed growth.

Water in the evening, favoring a large watering once a week rather than small waterings each evening.
